Yes, they are. Those that believe that dragons sprang into existence because somebody speculated on what dinosaur bones could mean is putting the cart before the horse. Dragons were known of in ancient times long before anyone dug up a dinosaur bone and supposedly conjured up the story of dragons to explain them. Dragons first--dinosaur bones later. The only reason anyone would have thought that dinosaur bones were the bones of dragons is because dragons were already known to exist.
