  1. A duvet cover is a very lightweight zip-up, or button closure cover designed to allow you to use your existing bedding or comforter on your bed without having to purchase a whole new bedset.

I recently purchased a new duvet cover in a very neutral beige color so we could use one of our older comforters that we LOVE...it was an expensive down comforter and is pretty sun bleached and old looking, but since it's really comfortable and light, it's perfect for summertime. The duvet cover lets us use this old comforter and it looks great on our bed because it matches the rest of our bedding set.

Duvet covers are a great investment if you go with neutral colors and fabrics that will allow you to still match most accent pieces (like throw pillows, curtains, floor rugs, etc.) because they give you a brand new look without having to buy everything new!

  2. A down/feather duvet is not meant to be used without a cover of some sort.

I've never had a "regular" comforter; always a duvet with a cover and have never found them to be any more bulky than conventional comforters.

I think they look better than comforters because it's much easier to wash the cover at home, which keeps the bedding look fresh.  Also, once you have a duvet, you can buy different covers for it to change the look of you room without spending a lot of money.  I have a dark chocolate brown duvet cover for the winter and fall, and a light mocha coloured one for spring and summer.
