  1. Traditionally, since the weather person on TV is the only "scientist" on the news staff, they are usually tasked with giving the information about earthquakes. The study of earthquakes is in the geology field of science and most meteorologists are not too well versed in geology.

But, as is the case with many of the meteorologists, they get asked many questions on fields that are somewhat related to meteorology and this is one of them that is frequently asked. After being in the field for many years, I took a course in geology specifically geared towards the science of earthquakes so I could answer some of the questions concerning them that I am asked. It really helped last week when we got several calls after the earthquake and aftershocks in Southeast Illinois.

Meteorology does often deal with interactions with between the atmosphere and the earth and oceans but plate tectonics is not one that has any appreciable affect on the atmosphere so it is not normally part of the meteorologists background unless they go out and take a few courses in geology as I did.

  2. Science - Earthquakes; I would assume would come under the subject title : Geology

Weather; I would assume would come under the subject titlte: Metereology

  3. both ,the study of the weather is science

  4. Geology, Earth Science

  5. Weather IS a science.

Earthquakes (I think) fall under geology?  The U.S. Geologhical Survey is the department that follows earthquakes.  Yet, on the television, the weather reportes as well as the regular reporters speak of earthquakes.

  6. Earthquakes are a geological issue, so i would have to say science though science is a generalised term to encompass all sciences like botany, chemistry and medecine.

  7. It is really geology and there are sites that watch earthquakes around the clock.
