Most of electronic stuff nowadays are made in China but is that the same for electronics sold in Japan?

Always thought that the Japanese do not take lightly to their own brands made elsewhere. If a Japanese consumer buys ,say a BLU RAY Player in Tokyo, would it be made in Japan or China(in which case it should be cheaper)?

thanks

  1. I can tell you that SHARP's LCD TVs (AQUOS) are made here in Japan. Canon too, they have a huge factory here, and had said that they'd rather pay for the expensive human resources than to sacrifice its high standards.

It's interesting that Quality control isn't their main concern, Japanese manufactures are just as worried that the Chinese will make copies of their product and had been reluctant to opening factories in China. (even participating in trade shows, I heard from Zebra, a pen manufacturer)

The way electronics are sold here is through huge electronic stores, called camera stores. You won't find any Chinese brands in these stores, because of their tides with Japanese companies.

Even American products have a hard time. HP barely exists, Lexmark printers often comes free with a computer, IBM bought by businesses, all the other world brands, Acer,  Gateway barely exists.

It's all about protecting the local market, and the "often ignorant" consumers would rather listen to the guy at the store, pay double than buy some Chinese "junk"

  2. Prety much the same everywhere.  The internal components quite often are universal to all brands.  I have seen Toshiba chips in Sony units and vice versa.

  3. Yeah, I saw a HD DVD in Japan. In fact my grandparents in Japan have one. I dont know about BLU RAY though. Oh and I think those ones in Japan are made there.
