Question:

Are electrons classified as matter? (This is a Physics question, I promise!)?

When talking about experiments that prove that matter has a wavelength (de Broglie wavelengths) observations were made that the diffractions patterns of electrons and x-rays in crystals were very similar. (Therefore matter behaves like light and a wave.)

So (and excuse my total ignorance when it comes to Chemistry-related things) is electron matter? Yes, it's an obvious question but... yeah.

  1. Yes, because it has mass all be it very small.  Electrons act as particles (with some complicated exceptions in quantum physics) but for the average discussion yes they are matter.  Light (you mentioned x-rays) behaves like tiny packets of wave energy and so exhibit some particle property but do not actually have mass.

  2. its called a particle wave.. because it acts both as a wave and particle.. but it is matter.. because it has mass.. yet matter is just another form of energy.. if you would like to know more go to www.youtube.com and search berkely physics 10 quantum theory it explains all of that in that lecture.

  3. Electrons are matter, not energy. They have mass and volume, therefore, they are matter, though they can act as particle radiation. Note the word, 'particle'.
