Are elephants actually afraid of mice?

  1. It unlikely. The elephants I have worked with haven't been afraid of much - they'd be more likely to step on it by accident. But if its something really foreign to them (like in a zoo and they've never seen one. ) and you show it to them there very well could be a fear reaction just because they're unfamiliar.

Any time any animal is  confronted with anything at all that it is unfamiliar, it is either curious or wary.  I'd suggest to you that the rustling of the straw in its pen would bring on curiosity, not terror and run.   If it is a predator animal, a lion, it would be curious.  If  it were a prey animal it would be wary.  Elephants that are adult, are neither, so it may be curious, or wary, depending upon the experience of the animal
