Are elves really evil?

No.  Elves are not evil.  Read the Wikipedia article on elves.  It starts with "an elf is a creature of Norse Mythology", and among other things discusses legends which associate them with ancestor worship -- that is, the Cult of the Dead.

The truth is that Christians and other religions will often demonize survivals of the older religions.  There are light elves and dark elves, as cited above, but dark elves are not evil and light elves are not good.  They are survivals of the Old Ways, which it is well to avoid.

"Elf" can be a general word for faeries, but when it refers to a specific species of faeries, they're not to be feared.  They don't really care about us.  You may think of them as the Gentry, the Lords and Ladies, who live beneath the hills and dance.  The other kind of specific faeries I've heard called elves are the dwarfed tribes of nature spirits.  Neither of them want anything to do with people.  They're trooping faeries who wish to be left to their own devices.  Now, if you bother them, they may be vengeful if you ruin their revels.  However, under no ordinary conditions are elves to be feared.

In folklore there are two kinds of elves, the Light court (who are good and help humans - at least at times) and the Dark court (who are, if not evil, certainly mischievous and like to play cruel jokes on humans)

Both kinds of elves/fairies like to be left offerings of bread, milk and beer.  There is no real way to protect yourself from elves or fairies except to carry 'cold iron' on you, or to protect your house with iron buried beneath all the entrances to the house.

No. You really don't need to "protect your family" as most elves consider that humans are a little beneath them and try to avoid them. Not likely that "evil" elves are looking for you. They don't care.
