  2. There are no clean diamonds. Exploring for them, digging them out of the ground and selling them requires sacrifices from the natural environment, from the wildlife and fish that live on it

  3. It would depend on where you're digging but probably not. Most large scale, corporate diamond mines are underground (Canada, South Africa). The dirty, polluting, deadly, surface digging you see on TV and in movies could damage local animal populations and possibly have an impact to the watershed downstream as well. However, those kinds of mines are usually not very big or organized so I doubt they cause enough widespread damage to impact a whole animal species.

    If you're asking because you don't want to buy a diamond that might have been obtained through unethical or hurtful means, try Canada. There are several new mines in the northern part of the country that are very clean and safe and do as little damage as possible.
