Question:

Are feathers, rather than flowers, a weird wedding theme?

Feathers are cheaper, and my fiance has a crafty friend who has really made the feather bouquets look nice. However, it's suddenly turned into feathers this, and feathers that. The centerpieces on the tables at the reception are now vases with feathers in them.

Ok, what gets me is that now, my fiance is talking about having feather boutonnieres for the groomsmen. That's the part that I'm most concerned about, I guess. Isn't it weird for guys to be wearing little peacock feathers in their tuxes?

I just don't freaking know. I'm not comfortable with it, but then I don't know what to do because we can't just throw flower boutonnieres on the groomsmen when there are no other flowers in the wedding.

I need some honest opinions, please.

  1. Well, I think the feathers sound a little strange too, to be honest.

However, the important thing is not whether other people think it is strange or not, but that you are not comfortable with it.  A lot of women seem to think the wedding, especially the decorations, is their thing, not the groom's.  However, I would be horrified if I learned that my fiance was not happy or comfortable with what I have chosen.  You need to let your fiance know that you are not entirely comfortable with the feathers and that you would like some candlelight.  You should be able to compromise and have an opinion too.

  2. I think the feathers idea can be really cool, if it looks nice but the guys may e overdoing it a bit. It will kind of look weird.

  3. I've seen feather fascinators, and they look very good!

Also, I've seen feather centerpieces and they are divine!

I think that done well it will be fantastic.

I do, however, think that feather boutonniers and a feather bouquet is an overkill. At least the boutoniers shoudl be flowers, I do not think that any man would appreciate being forced to wear feathers on their lapel. Yes! your worries are warranted... I would put my foot down on this one.

    Good luck

  4. You're absolutely allowed to do anything you want with your wedding decorations. This includes swapping feathers for flowers, and it also includes not having boutonnieres on the groomsmen. There's nothing in the wedding ceremony that requires a boutonniere, and if you don't mind them going without, just don't worry about it! You can even go with an alternate way of coordinating colors, such as matching ties, vests, etc.

  5. Ive seen that done and it looks good as long as you don't use regular old feathers i mean dont use like duck feathers use peacock or somthing like that. it can be very beautiful.

  6. You say weird like it would be a bad thing. A lot of people want to be unique.

Yes, it's weird but so are the bouquets. That doesn't make it any less cool or appropriate.

Peacock feather boutonnieres don't look girly or frilly or any other -ly that guys run from.  Check out http://www.instyleweddings.com/weddings/... for a nice version.

  7. I think feathers would be really beautiful and unique (not weird!), but it sounds as if you're on here looking for someone to back you up. Since you're obviously opposed to using so many feathers, why don't you stick with the centerpieces and then have the groom only wear a feather bouttoniere (so he stands out) and have the rest of the guys wear regular flower bouttonieres. You can do the same thing with the girls-- you get a bouquet of feathers (can mix up a few of them with the flowers) and the girls can have regular bouquets. Or something like that. This way, you're incorporating the flowers (for your hubby) while still getting the traditional flowers.

Or, think about having the friend make hair ornaments for the girls with feathers in it. My cousin had this in her wedding and it was so chic. It was basically one of those hair clips that looks like a a great big eagle's toenail claw (curved and comes to a point) that had feathers on it. When stuck into the girls' updo's, it was very elegant.

Either way, I think it will be awesome!

  8. yeah! i love that idea. i think peacock feathers would be beautiful.

  9. NOT SURE IF I LIKE IT OR NOT... I WOULD HAVE TO SEE IT BUT TO BE HONEST I AM INTRIGUED AND THINK IT WOULD BE A GREAT IDEA BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF IT BEFORE. AND YOU COULD SET A TREND...

I THINK PEACOCK FEATHERS ARE SO PRETTY AND WOULD WORK WELL WITH CERTAIN COLORS.

  10. Well, it's different...that's for sure. I don't want to say good or bad since I haven't seen it. I'm getting married in 10 days and its getting down to the nitty gritty. So I'm realizing a lot of the small details like that (that are huge to us) nobody is going to really notice and think, "omg that's weird" they'll just know that it is co-ordinated and that you look beautiful. I would say if your fiance and his groomsman are okay with it, why not. Like you said the flowers may look weird with no other flowers. Another thought is they don't HAVE to have boutonnieres, really. You could do a pocket square in a color matching their vests, the bridesmaids dresses, or some of the colors of the peacock feathers. Good luck and happy marriage!! :)

  11. Certainly not!  I've see it many times in magazines and on websites!

Instead of a bunch of flowers, I'm gonn use just a few but with fish in a fish bowl as the centerpieces - for my beach theme!!!

  12. feathers have been used in many weddings instead of flowers. it beautiful with the right touch.
