Are ferrets truly that bad of a pet?

my mom tells me they tare up the couch go to the bathroom wherever they want and that they stink . I really want a ferret and i think they are really cute are they truly that bad

Ferrets can be wonderful pets for the right people!

They tear up the couch if you allow them to. They're intelligent and can be trained. They can be litter boxed trained, so you don't need to worry about them going to the bathroom everywhere. Ferrets do have their own odor. Some people don't mind it, so I guess it really depends.

Just because ferrets are cute doesn't mean they're the right pet for you. If you're interested in getting a ferret, please do a LOT of research BEFORE getting one. Meet ferrets if you can, and talk to other ferret owners about their experiences. They're not the right pets for everyone, so research is a must.

my dad used to rent out an apartment. a guy lived in the apartment and ended up not having enough money to stay there a month. so he left. everything in it he just left there..

including his ferret. it was like a week before my dad found it in the apartment. he found it in a cage with no food, only water. it was starving and you could see its' bones.

my family took it in. we fed it and took care of it. it ended up being the nicest animal in the world. i learned to love the ferret. her name was sadi (: she was so cute. and so sweet.

they are great pets. sadi was atleast. i have heard many stories where they turn out just like dogs. and sadi was just like that. she used to hear you and come running to get treats.

she ended up getting really sick a yrs later. ):

They do have their own odor but they only smell a lot if you don't clean their enclosure like you should. They don't tear things up if you train them not to and they don't go to the bathroom wherever if you litter train them.

Well trained ferrets make Wonderful pets.  But you need to be willing to put in a lot of time.  If you are willing to take the time to train them, they are very smart so you can train them to only go to the bathroom in their cage.  However they do have VERY sharp claws, so if you are going to let them roam around the house they may scratch up furniture - you would have to train them just like a cat not to do that.  And they can smell really bad if you don't clean their cage often enough.  Because ferrets are so smart, you need to be willing to take the time to train them and play with them a lot.  If you are up to the challenge you will really enjoy the rewards of having one.
