I have been surfing for over 2 years now. I prefer riding a bigger boards since im 6"0 and about 160. I usually ride my friends 6"7 fun shape. I've been looking at the fish boards cause they seem more my style, and i hate paddling a lot. Im pretty bad for how much ive surfed. The waves were i live are pretty small. Is a fish a good board for me, or should i just go regular short board?

  1. I'm 6ft 3in myself i ride a mini mal simply because of the wave we get in south wales uk but Ive ridden a fish board 6ft 7in, in Portugal and i would say that because of your height it wouldn't be a good idea for you to buy one if the wave by you isn't power full enough you would need at least a 4-5ft wave face for you to get enough momentum.

  2. I'd try the fish, you'll probably enjoy it more in the smaller surf.

  3. For your size and the surf where you ride, a fish might not be the best.  The fish needs a steeper face so you can pump your speed to move faster.  A small or slow wave might not provide enough juice.  I think the fun shape will work best for you.  You might also look into a Walden CD or a Nezzy.

  4. yep, a fish would be good, certainly better than a normal short board, if your still a novice/beginner. i'm reasonably ok, i can do quite good turns at the moment. i'm a medium height and i ride a fish, because i'm mostly surfing smaller waves, theyre easier to catch waves on than a normal short board and very turnable. retro, fun shapes, are sometimes quite good, but often they can be very poor value and pretty but not very surfable, i would go for a fish!

    good luck

  5. yeah, because they're wider and thicker, they're more stable and easier to paddle. You've only been surfing for 2 years so stick with the fish or variation of it. You might try a hybrid like a 7-8' longboard.
