I have read that it is a fact with computers, and I am wondering if it is for TVs? Also, are there TVs meant to be energy saving?

  1. This is a very interesting question and is one I asked when I considered buying an LCD screen for my computer replacing the CRT monitor. My local computer shop had never been asked this question before and he too was surprised at his findings. He found that the power consumption varied greatly. Ranging from just over 20watts to over 40watts. Seems you have shop around and don't take any notice of what's written on the back. An in line watt meter is the only true way of measuring it's consumption.

I understand Plasma screens are real hungry.

As a matter of interest my monitor is a 17inch ViewSonic drawing 21watts when lit and 1watt on stand-by.

  2. If you replace a CRT set with a LCD set of the same size, it will consume about half the energy. Plasma sets use more energy, generally. The larger the set is, the more energy it consumes.

C-Net reviewed efficient sets, and Phillips made an "eco friendly" unit.

  3. it's true.

    much more efficient.  maybe  :-(

interesting article.  it says that, since we buy a much larger flat screen, it consumes more energy.  worse, it claims that we don't replace, but just add a new TV, retaining the old one.  and since both have instant on features that draw power even when turned off, energy use increases quite a bit.
