Question:

Are fleas invincible?

I need some suggestions on getting rid of fleas. My cat, which is primarily a house cat, picked up fleas somehow. After becoming aware that she had fleas we have tried numerous things to exterminate the fleas, but the fleas persist.

We have washed the cat with a flea shampoo, applied Frontline Plus to the cat, flea bombed the house, put flea powder in the carpeted areas, vacuumed numerous times, practically washed everything in the house, and treated the yard for fleas and insects.

We really don't know what else to do. We've talked exterminators but they want to charge a lot of money to spray the house with the same chemicals that we already sprayed most areas with.

Do we have any other options, or are we just going to have to hope for cool and dry weather to get rid of these damned things?

  2. I've got 2 full grown Cats , a 2000 sq ft house on a 1.25 acre property and all we used was Advantage per instructions for a few months and I haven't seen a flea for years.

Maybe theyre under your house or who knows !

  3. Fleas lay eggs constantly, and all they need to hatch is warmth. To dry out the fleas and they're eggs get Borax detergent, the powder kind, and spread it all over every carpeted area of your house, then rub it in a little and leave for a day or two, then vacuum. Repeat this for about 2 weeks and as long as you are doing everything else, The frontline and all, it should work pretty well.

  4. fleas are a nightmare to get rid of, dont use frontline get advantage, and ask your vet for a capstar pill, this will kill the fleas that are on you cat within 30 minutes, then apply the advantage to keep them off, use a carpet fresh flea killer, and then get a couple of flea collars and put them in your vacuum, they wont help on your cat, but they will inside a vacuum, you have to stay on top of this, one flea can lay up to 6,000 eggs a day,  good luck

  5. Try Advantage. I know a lot of people use Frontline and they say it works, but it didn't work for me 2 years ago on my dog and I quit using it. I have used Advantage on my cats for 2-3 years and it works every time. The main problem is you are bringing the fleas in on your clothes and shoes when you go out in your yard. You will probably have to treat your yard as well. Harsh chemicals that you use in your house are really dangerous for cats, make sure you put her in a seperate room when you treat the rest of the house.

  6. If your cat is current with a Vet (been there within the last 12 months) they can dispense Advantage to you. You apply it the same way as Frontline and it lasts for one month. Be sure to reapply it every month. I've personally never used Frontline on my pets, but alot of our clients (work @ animal hospital) swear by it, others (including myself) like and use the Bayer products (Advantage and Advantix). Next year, when it begins to warm up in Spring, start using the Advantage right away, keep using it until just after the second frost in your area.

  7. Getting rid of fleas is not easy. You have to wash the cat with flea shampoo (and use frontline as directed), and put down flea powder in your carpets, and in the pet bed every 10-14 days for about 6 weeks.  You have to make sure you wash your sheets if the cats sleep with you weekly in HOT water.  The fleas lay eggs almost immediately after being born, so even if you kill the live fleas, the eggs are there waiting to hatch. I had to do the above routine for 8 weeks the one and only time I had fleas in my house.  An exterminator won't work, because they will only come once - unless you want to pay for one to come every 10-14 days - you have to be vigilent.
