Are flying ants attracted to water?

I have a pool in my back yard and for the past two days, the surface has been COVERED with flying black ants. Are they attracted to water or what? How long will they be around and how do I get rid of them. I know they are ants and not termites because they have a segmented body. They just came out of nowhere. First time in the 7 years I have been at my house that I have seen them like this. Please help!

Had the same problem with flying antys in my house the last two days.   They were swarming by the front door so I sprayed them and sprinkled ant be gone around the outside of the door.

The flying ants you have are alates (the reproductive caste of ants).  Many species tend to be attracted to light and they are often found in pools of water due to being attracted to house/street lights, sun or the moon being reflected on the water surface.  

As for how long they will be around, it really depends on the weather.  Mating flights are initiated when temperature, humidity and wind is correct for that particular species.  So until the weather changes, you may be stuck with them.  To keep them out of your pool, you may want to put a cover or sheet on it to stop any light reflection.
