This is for all on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. What,if anything, have you given up buying due to higher prices?

  1. When I heard about the recession, I shopped three weekend in advance, using coupons and stockpiled on goods that were heavy or expensive.  Even though, I run out of things, and have to shop.  By golly, the prices are worse than what was reported.

The stockpile has allowed me to buy meat.  Some of my family and friends were laughing at me to begin with and they're not laughing now.  They call my stockpile a bomb shelter.

All I can say, It looks like we Americans are here for the long ride.

  2. Strictly shop sales now.  I buy items even if I don't need them just because they're on sale at the moment.  I shop at two different supermarkets after I have checked out the circulars to see what's on sale.

We stopped eating out like we used too.  I miss those days.

  3. Yes. I base my shopping and meal planning around what is on sale now. I don't buy as much snack food as I used to and when I buy a pack of rolls I make sure I have two meals planned that I can use them up before they go stale.

Food prices are getting outrageous. I also noticed a big jump on pet food in the past few weeks, but I won't give up my cat just because of it.

  4. Bacon and milk. Actually all breakfast foods. The prices are outrageous. Its cheaper to just eat lunch.

  5. I make good money and I buy only the best food money can buy.

  6. No.

  7. no, I just started buying my groceries from a chain that sells them in bulk, it cut my bill in halve.

  8. I don't eat out anymore.  I cook all my meals myself.  Restaurants are too expensive unless you're going to eat fast food, which I won't.  I also have cut down on driving and drive slower to save money on fuel, but I still buy the usual stuff at the supermarket.

  9. Great question! I asked the same thing more or less yesterday.I have started to limit portion size.Eat less meat.More beans and rice.We have a garden in the yard thanks to my sister and we have enjoyed cantaloupe ,watermelon, cucumbers and tomatoes this year.Mostly what we have bought so much less of is meat and less cakes and pies which isnt a bad thing. Also we eat out far less and when we do eat out  I will split the meal with my mom  and get carryout for that purpose.I think I have completely given up on buying the premade pizzas and lasagnas they are just too exspensive.Around 10$ for things the deli makes so we just buy frozen cheapo pizzas.for a few dollars. Also we buy the cheapest brands I hate to say.I look at price first then I look at who made it.I try to figure out what can be a substitution and what simply must have the real thing.Im very flexible and creative.I can make a simple meal out of most anything. The seasoning can turn something simple into something great.Last week I took a large avocado and mashed it with salt and lemon then I heated up tortllas and make avocado tacos. It was simple and delicious. No meat.I also make fried potatoes and onions with eggs. Its healthy and delicious. You dont need toast or bacon its great by itself..I do not skimp on cooking oil though.I only cook with olive oil or butter as they are healthier than margarine or corn oil. This is a bit exspensive but I try to use very little .

  10. The prices of everything has me feeling like I have absolutely no extra money for going to the movies or anything...and I am trying to buy cheaper food and getting extra of things that last like peanut butter. I'm not broke...just paranoid really I guess. :(

  11. We planted garden to grow own fruit and vegetables. We buy certain items when on sale, eating more pasta and sauce, more salads (garden fresh).  We have had to give up the luxuries, like ice cream - at $7 a half gallon it is too costly.  We must watch every penny we spend on groceries as food costs have risen so dramatically and so fast. We have also taken to eating hot dogs and burgers more, than steak

  12. Yes. We are buying less. We carefully consider our choices. We compare prices even more than before. We buy store brand when it seems like there is little difference.

  13. Yes very much so.I have stopped buying quick foods now everything must be cooked,Even Potatoes have gone up and that's a staple at my home.$7 for 10 lbs is just ridiculous.Cabbage, tomatoes are out of sight. We did do a small garden this year but our weather has been so erratic its almost a wasted effort.I am sure we will have to do more somehow.I was shocked to fine that country crock whipped margine was $4.Its mostly vegetable oil not real butter anyone else notice this kind of price jump?I do beleive we are all in for a long hard time of it.Wages are not going up at all.In my area all we hear is about layoffs.Yes food and utilities is what will hurt us.
