Question:

Are foreign language credits essential for college acceptance?

Let me explain.

I am going into Junior year of High School, and I have 2 credits of Spanish under my belt. Unfortunately the college I want to attend "requires" 3 years of foreign language. I'm a pretty good student, and I do a lot of extracurricular activity. I just cannot stomach another year of Spanish, as it would destroy my G.P.A for that year (I may be a good student in all other regards, but Spanish kills me)

Okay, heres my real question... If I have EVERYTHING necessary for acceptance to my chosen college, except the full foreign language requirements (the college I'm looking at is a liberal arts school), what are the chances of my acceptance?

  1. If that's what they require, that's what they require.

Can you take the next level of Spanish with another teacher, or at another school? (e.g. some high schools allow you to take college classes...)

Can you do something differently in terms of study habits?

If you are having trouble with high school Spanish, this may indicate a deeper problem that you'd do well to solve now, before college overwhelms you.

  2. A liberal arts school in particular wants language, and if they require three years that's definitely a requirement.  Part of going for a school is that they want a certain amount of competency, and language is part of that.  See if you can start another language, if possible and take it in summer school as well.

  3. Your chances at acceptance are extremely low. Look at it this way...if it comes down to you and a similar student who has the 3 language credits, they will obviously choose them over you.

You need to have the minimum credits required by a school in order to be accepted there otherwise you need to look at a different school.
