Question:

Are frozen vegetables as good for you as fresh ones? ?

I am on a pretty tight grocery budget. I also like to eat varied vegetables and it's hard to buy many different types of veggies without having them go bad by the end of the week. Thus I've started buying different frozen veggies and using them in stir fries and as side dishes to supplement my diet. Is it bad for my diet if most of the vegetables I eat are frozen? I'm also wondering about canned fruits/vegetables? It just makes more economical sense to buy like this.

  1. not as good but still better than cans

  2. Fresh are better for you but honestly who has the time and if they go bad your right its such a waste of money...  Frozen are still great and healthy and not bad for you at all.  I hadn't really though of it much til I watched that youtube video and read the comments as well.  People comment and say fresh veggies are Sooo much better for you.  Honestly though I don't think they are that much better in terms of nutrition... same with canned ones as long as you are getting those in your diet you better off then half of Americans I would say.

  3. Yes, The frozen vegetables are cut ,packed and frozen within short span of time after they were picked but fresh vegetables in markets are not actually fresh, they might be in cold storage from as long as 6 months or more and cold storage is not same as freezing.

If you are picking and eating the vegetables within a week or so, then nothing is better than these.

  4. frozen are just as healthy and in some cases more healthy than fresh...canned vegetables are not quite as good though

  5. no.

  6. Canned veggies are processed so they have some nutritional break down. Any time a fruit of veggie is cut it starts to break down. Frozen obviously is not as good as fresh, but they are better than tinned and loaded with salt, in my book. Why not just buy smaller amounts at the store. I shop at a local market called Monettes, anything i don't eat i put into a container, preferably one i can release the air out of.

  7. they are fine. veggies are veggies.

  8. Well, fresh fruit and vegetables are always the best in nutritional value.

But I don't think frozen ones are that bad either.

Canned fruit can have sugary syrup though.

  9. I have heard that frozen vegetables can actually be better than the fresh ones you buy from the shop because they are frozen fresh, when you can't be certain how old the ones at the shop are.  They can be sitting in cold storage for weeks, in the case of fruit, months.  I once saw some oranges for sale at a supermarket that came from Egypt.  Yet Australia should be able to supply them?  I buy frozen vegies all the time, so I wouldn't be worried about it.

  10. Fresh produce is always better for you. But if you are on a budget, frozen vegetables will do. Not canned vegetables, FROZEN.

As to canned fruits, the amount of sugar and syrup used is not good for you at all. Oranges, Bananas, and Grapes are usually on sale, so go with those.

Just watch your salt intake when it comes to cooking your food and vegetables.

  11. not as good for you but still better than fast food, the nutrients are killed off when you freeze them, than even more so once you boil them back up, i have the same prob, and i know it gets old but i buy vegetables atleast 3 times a week, and they are just as expensive as frozen you just gotta stop at the grocery store a little more, and most vegetables dont go bad by the end of the week if you put them in tupperwares, or maybe even bought some and sauteed or cooked them then put it in a container, fresh is always better.

  12. Frozen vegetables actually are consistently more full of vitamins than fresh.  When you buy fresh veggies at the store, you have no idea how long it has been since it has been picked.  Alot of times that stuff can lay in a warehouse way too long.  Vegetables are frozen generally right after they are picked, so will retain more nutrients.  The same is true for canned which are processed soon after picking and a good bet for nutrients.  Unfortunately, you will give up some of the fresh taste.

  13. fresh is always better, but frozen is not bad at all, just stay away from canned!!

and organic is always better too, oh and veggies are not veggies up there!!! do some research.

  14. Frozen vegetables are just as good as fresh.  They actually hold the vitamins in alot longer.     When you have fresh vegetables in your fridge for a period of time, they soon start too loose something in it that holds the nutrients in.    So frozen vegetables are better in that respect, although, fresh always taste better.     So if you see frozen vegetables on sale, that is the time to stock the freezer.

  15. I've heard that they all have the same food value, even if you overcook the veggies.  Fresh can be a real waste of money if you don't get to use them right away.  I'd go for the taste your family likes.  I use frozen all the time, except when my garden is producing.  We like canned green beans the best and creamed corn--canned, not our favorite veggies..  I also like the frozen broccoli with cheese sauce--I think it's Green Giant--and has 50 calories per serving.  I find them at Target.  I'd rather see your family eat some kind of veggies then none at all.  For the frozen, I put 1 cup of water, a teaspoon or so of salt, and a glob of butter in a small sauce pan and bring it to a boil.  Then I add the box of frozen veggies, put a lid on the pan and bring it to a boil again.  Reduce heat to low, med. low and let simmer for another 5 minutes.  You can do the same in the microwave--only a smaller amount of water in a glass bowl, cover with waxed paper and zap for about 5 minutes.  I learned the first recipe in home ec in the late 1950s.

  16. Technically no, but there isn't a big enough difference for your body to tell a difference.  Eating some frozen vegetables is better than not eating any at all.

  17. well fresh vegetables are better for you then frozen

  18. the frozen vegetables are not bad, however, when you freeze vegetables, most of good sources such as vitamin died. However, it doesn't mean it becomes harmful.

canned fruits/vegetables are not really good choice to eat because the company put a lot of sugars for canned fruits/vegetables so it can actually tastes more delicious. Also, they put a lot of MSG to keep them fresh for long time and much sweeter, so it's not really good choice to eat.

For the health, fresh is the best, forzen is not bad, but canned is not good.

  19. Frozen vegetables are better than canned.  They are more "natural". They don't have all the preservatives and sodium in them as can does.  In a pinch can veggies can be used but, In my family I mostly use frozen because fresh are so expensive.  Can fruits tend to have a lot of sugars in them.   If you need to use canned fruits I would say it get fruit that are packaged in their own natural juices and with out added sugar.  The fruits that are packaged in heavy syrup are really bad.  I always buy natural applesauce to avoid all the extra in them.  I hope this helps with your question.

  20. i do the same, although stay away from the canned. They're full of sodium & sugar to preserve. I'd rather die than eat them out of a can. okay..so I exaggerated...every once in a while I'll get a can of fruit as a treat instead of a bag of chips or cake or something ot get that sweet craving cured...way better choice in that manner.

but, even the frozen will have a limited amount of salt added for preserving, but it's still very healthy and much more economical.

  21. No, I think fresh vegetables are the best. All canned/bagged vegetables have some type of preservatives in them.

  22. Take it a look at it this way....Fresh vegetables are an optimal choice though a bit more expensive.....Frozen vegetables are just as good althought sometimes some natural preservatives are added to it and also, can't have these lingering around in your freezer for too long either..ice particles will eventually penetrate thru these frozen foods and render 'em useless,  crippling taste...for frozen vegetables you do have to use 'em before the noted expiration date.  As far as canned vegetables,  these do last for a long time but, most often the preservatives on these aren't natural..much more chemically produced, for long durations....however once these are out of the can,  some do taste pretty good I must say.  Preservatives aren't necessarily harmful but, there've been some studies in the past that some agents mixed in in some preservatives might actually cause cancer over the long run but, it's not something anyone should worry about heavily per se.  Like I said, if you have the money to buy fresh vegetables...it's a heck of better choice althought you do have to remember that fresh vegatables are much more perishable...don't last long up on a shelf though.

  23. Frozen's just as good as fresh!

Canned is only good when you can't get fresh or frozen really.. but there's nowt wrong with frozen..

A good frozen veg recipe consits of a bag of frozen broccoli, a ham stock cube, and lots of water and maybe a potato... all in a pot = the tastiest broccoli soup!
