  1. Honda  and Toyota are on the drivers side.   GM on the passenger.   I know it varies by manufacturer

Here's an interesting fact (useful for when you rent a car).

On your gas gauge, there is an icon of a gas pump.   If the handle on the gas pump extends to the left of the icon, your gas cap is on the drivers side.   If the handle extends to the right of the icon, it will be on the passenger side.

  2. it is not the pump but the place to fill is usually on the driver's side in my experience (not trying to be rude)

  3. with older models it varies,  i think on new cars the standard is on the driver side.

  4. It is confusing.  On my Mercury Mountaineer it is on the drivers side, but on my Pontiac Grand Am it is on the passenger.  I have to remember this when I  am filling up which car I'm driving!

  5. 50:50 right and left. Some manufactures vary the location by model. Some by the models generation.

Some Jaguar and Mercedes (probably others) have a filler on both sides.

I don't understand the math behind it but if the gas filler is equally distributed on the left and right of cars there is less chance of having to do a U turn when you get the the gas pump.

On many cars the fuel filler is locates opposite the exhaust pipe. This begs the question why is the exhaust sometime on the left and sometimes on the right.
