I'm doing research on homosexual behavior inside mens' state prisons, particularly, California, but I welcome feedback from LEOs outside CA. When men are sentenced & handed over to DOC, do they separate g*y and transgender men away from the prison population? Or are they allowed to mix right in with them ?? What about the county jail system??

  1. As a former corrections officer from Arizona, no.  Homosexuals are not separated from the general public in normal situations.  As a corrections officer, I encountered this on only 2 occasions, and in each case the "male" inmate was in the process of being transgendered, and had the upper parts of a woman and the lower parts of a man.

Such a person would be highly sought after in a prison and had to be kept in a maximum security unit for this person's safety and the stability of the unit.

Yes, you are correct, situations such as you describe do happen.  The Department will investigate allegations of sexual assault, pimping and prostitution IF it brought to their attention through a complaint, kite, or by an officer observing an incident.

Protective custody is always an option for all inmates, but it is not something that a department will typically use proactively.  It is incredibly costly to house an inmate in protective custody, but departments will do so if they have sufficient cause to do so.  The mere fact that someone is g*y is not sufficient to justify placement in protective custody and sexual orientation is not something that is routinely collected by administration officials.  There are also very real civil rights issues at play, because segregating inmates based upon sexual orientation could be construed as a violation of their civil rights and equal protection.  Yes, it may protect the inmate from physical harm, but would deny the inmate access to programming, work opportunities, and educational opportunities.

And I could just imagine the lawsuit that would arise through a CO classifying an inmate has homosexual due to an effeminate mannerisms.

  2. NO, they may request protective custody it is not automatic. Usually they are part of the general population,.

  3. You should watch MSNBC special reports they have informational shows on prisons almost every day.

Also, from what I have seen of these shows.  They are NOT separated.

Men have also contracted Aids in prison.

  4. haha this question made me chuckle. thanks.

  5. you should cite peoples answers here in your paper

  6. In PA they are mixed in together the only men who are separated are rapist, Child molesters and Snitches they put them in protective custody which means they are locked in 23 hrs a day because it takes too much man power to keep things under control when they are out because these man are targets for the rest of the prisoners and they stand out by having to wear certin color jumpsuits. But in my opinion WHY DO WE PROTECT RAPITS AND CHILD MOLESTERS???

  7. To my knowledge the only ones that are separated are the trans/genders and I believe they are housed at the vaca ville prison. The rest are put in general population unless they request segregation.<<<<<<<<<<<<<Added>>>>>>>>>.... was housed at 3 different Ca. state prisons! 1- level 3 and 2 -level 2.The level 3 was cell living and the 2's were dorm living and in my 2yrs. I never saw the rapes etc. your talking about! Perhaps I'm just blind!
