Yes. There is variation in the mane color of male lions. Some are darker than others. The darkest are known as "black maned" lions. This trait can be passed down to the lion's cubs. Lions have existed in Africa, Europe and America before the last ice age. Modern lions look the way they do because their ancestors aquired the proper number of mutations to allow ancient lion species to evolve into modern species of lions.
