  1. They aren't quite as tame as hamsters but can be tamed quite well.

They sleep at night and are awake in the day which is good (hamsters are nocturnal).

You can keeo two in a cage the same size as a good size one you would provide for one syrian hamster but it would need to be a different style cage.  Gerbils need an area to burrow so need a deep plastic or glass base.  You can buy ready made gerbil set-ups from large petstores or you can buy an aquarium to fill with litter and attach the top part of an ordinary hamster cage on top.

  2. if you buy the gerbils from the same cage in the same store at the same time yes they can both live in one cage and it's not really needed to tame a gerbil because the are relativley clean already just clean their cage every month they are just as friendly as hamsters

  3. Gerbils need 10 litres of cage for the first gerbil, and 5 litres per gerbil you add. You could extent that to 10 per gerbil, but be carefull with getting a cage/tank that is too big, as they will be more likely to get territorial.

It really depends per individual gerbil how easy they are too tame them, and how willing they are to be tamed. I have 4 gerbils, 1 is totally tame, 2 do not mind much but 1 never likes being handled.

Just remember to be patient, not force the issue, and keep at it.

  4. I think if they were the same they would have the same name.

  5. It really depends on the type of hamster you mean, and the individual gerbil.  With handling, gerbils can be very tame.

Same applies to housing.  2 gerbils could maybe be in the same size cage as a hamster, but that depends on if you mean a syrian hamster, or what.  (And also what you think proper sizing would be.)  A 10 gallon is too small for 2 gerbils, they really need about 10 gallons PER gerbil. A gerbil could not live in a critter trail, either.  Really, something with that much plastic they'd chew up and be out of in under a day.

  6. They can be as tame, or better, then  hamster, it depends on the gerbil and the hamster, you tame them pretty much the same, they (in my experiance) get more attatched and bonded to you then a hamster does, but i don't know if that means more friedly persay, mine were bonded to me, but wern't always as freindly to my friends. And No, gerbils and hamsters can't live in the same cage together. I think that answers all your questions, if you have more, you can email me at unicornsighting@juno.com, i know it is my wierd address, but it is my policy not to give out my normal one on the internet. please put something about gerbils in the subject line. Thanks, and i hope i helped.

  7. One gerbil needs 10 gallons and 5 more for every gerbil after that! I would say that there as tame as each other! Just make sure the two gerbil as the same s*x
