Are guy friends suppose to give each other birthday gifts?

my husband gives his guy friends a gift card to their favorite store or eatery

we just dea;lt with this as our very good friend had a birthday yesterday we gave him two gift cards to our areas theater and a tshirt with a really cute saying that fit his personality

One of my best friends once gave me a Remington 1100 12 ga. pump shotgun for my birthday. I gave him a gift on his birthday, also. He collects knives, and I gave him a set of hunting knives. Why? Is there something wrong with that?
