  1. My hamster, Cookie, has scruffy fur quite alot. I don't worry about her though because she occasionally falls asleep under her water bottle and the bottle drips and she ends up giving herself a groom and hence the scruffy fur.

  2. Scruffy fur in which sense?

Hamsters normally have smooth fur and they groom it very well so that it remains fluffy and smooth. Few hamsters have greasy fur due to their genetic make up but it should also feels smooth.

If by scruffy, you mean it looks rough and unkempt, then there is a problem. Most probably she is the underdog in the cage and the other one is dominating over her. When there is domination, the underdog does not eat much, looks malnourished and does not groom herself. There is nothing you can do unless you separate them immediately. Within 10 days of separation, you can see the underdog change in character and become her own peppy and well groomed self.

  3. Scruffy fur is usually not a good sign. It can be an indication of fighting or illness. From what you've said, I'd guess it's fighting over territory and resources.

Until you can get a new cage, which I recommend you get ASAP, take out the wheel. Give them their own corner of food, their own chew toys, their own little hide-houses, etc. This will give them each their own things and hopefully prevent them from breaking out into a larger fight before you get a new cage. One wheel in the cage can cause a fight, so it's best to take that out right now.

Just be sure to keep a close eye on them to make sure a fight does not occur. Get a new cage as soon as you can and separate them.

  4. I used to have two hamsters (both females) in one cage, too. After you separate them, they will start looking a lot healthier after a couple of days. Their fur will look normal because they will be getting enough food, excersize, etc. Females are very dominant in their territory, so they will fight really hard. Probably one of the reasons her fur is scruffy.

  5. You can give it a dust bath.

They sell the very tiny dust house [it looks like I siting up hamster] and I beleive the dust should be right there.

My chinchillas fur get that way after hodling them for long due to grease on hands, after a dust bath all is well.

  6. After you seperate them. I bet you will see a differance. I think they are fighting. I was told that its not a good idea to mix females together. They get territorial.

  7. they can if they go though stuff like toilet rolls

  8. I am not really sure on what you mean by scruffy.

Different hamsters have different types of hair - just like us.

As long as his behavior is ok, as long as he is acting ok then he should be fine.

Yes, I would deffinately get seperate cages as soon as possible. Hamsters generally do ok together when they are younger, but as they get older they will fight more and more. It's not that they can't get along, but they are very territorial and will fight over space, etc.

  9. it could be wre there fighting or if they have been grooming each other and if syrian then there not suposed o be together anyway
