Are hand drawing skills important in order to be a video game conceptual artist?

I would like to be a video game conceptual artist/character designer when I'm done with high school, I have great technically accurate hand drawing skills, is that important?

  1. Hey I want to be a concept artist too! :)

    Well I've done reasearsh and found out you have both good imagination/drawing skills... this shouldn't be too hard...  if you're good at drawing than you should be in the clear... but always be constantly improving... they even have computers to make the drawing even better...

    In summary... if you can draw well and are imaginitive than you can become a video game conceptual artist...

  2. Yes, hand drawing skills are probably the single most important skill for a game concept artist.  

    Keep in mind that all jobs within the game industry are very competitive, and concept artist is one of the more desired jobs.  On top of that, most games only have *one* concept artist at a time, but dozens of animators, modelers, texture artists, etc.  So if this is your dream, you will need to go a good art college, get a degree in Fine Arts, and put together a top-notch portfolio.
