Are hdmi cables needed for upconverters?

im planning to buy a upconverter. it says it has a/v cables in the box but will those cables allow the upconverter convert the dvd to 720p format? or do i need to buy hdmi cables

  1. Yes, you need to use HDMI to upconvert a standard DVD to 720p or 1080p. It is a rule put in place by the DVD Forum, that you must use a protected path (HDCP) to output at anything beyond 480p.


  2. Most only upconvert through hdmi. There are a few that can upconvert through component. The ones in the box is just a standard compostite and audio cables. The most you can get is 480i with that. You at least need component to get 480p and 720p or 1080i if it will do that through component. So to make it simple, I would just get an hdmi cable.
