Evander Holyfield made a career out of it, along with Hopkins and James Toney. Coming from a guy whos been headbutted, it does rattle your brain, It wont knock you out but will shake you up.

And that I see 3 of them, Hit the one in the middle..I thought that was off Rocky 4 when he was fighting the Russian. But mabey he copied from the Leonard fight.

Also Leonard had an eye problem, during the later part of his career he could not see clearly out of his right eye.

More so then rattling your brain, a headbutt is the most effective way to cut your opponent (as long as its not seen) If a cut is caused by a headbutt the fight goes to the score cards. Holyfield was good not so much at headbutting, but when he comes in at you he makes sure he is not the one that is going to take the brunt.

So is a headbutt is effective as long as you get away with it

Hes not asking weather its sportsmen like or legal, hes asking if it is effective, and It is....if you dont get caught.

Oh yeah.  You need to be carful what part of your head you butt with though or you can do some damage to yourself as well.

If you do it just right sure is.  I guess giving someone a head butt is suppose to hurt them and not you; so like i said, if you do it right.  Suppose to be like hitting someone on the forehead with a rock, now imagine how effective getting hit on the forehead with a big rock?  Effective or not?

They can be devastating. If you do it correctly the opponent is either cut or bruised so he can not see.

If the officials see you, then you will be disqualified, and maybe more.

I head butted some one really hard before,  it hurt him and it definitely hurt  me too.

If you can believe a boxing story, Ray Leonard took a headbutt and came back to the corner complaining to Dundee "I see 3 of him", referring to his opponent.  Dundee reportedly said "well, hit the one in the middle".  I'm dubious of such assertions, but a headbutt all but killed Gerald McClellan.  Nothing dubious about that.  Very dangerous stuff.
