Are heavy equipment schools a good investment or should I just apply to a union?

I would like to go to a school in Madison WI as soon as possible rather than be on my local union's waiting list for who knows how long. I am concerned though with being able to find work as a rookie, also do operators get laid off in the winter? How does that work?

Construction is an up and down business. Try to get in the union. Ask around at the union and contractors about those schools after all they would know whether or not to hire them.
