  1. No organic frming is just that , organic that is a chemical

  2. Organic farmers consistently rank weed control as one of their major production problems. Cultural practices, including cultivation, flaming, soil solarization, and mulching are commonly used in organic production systems. However, several new herbicides approved by the the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) are now available to organic growers, pending approval as "regulated materials" by their organic certifying agencies. That means growers must receive approval from their certifying agency before using these materials. OMRI is a non-profit organization that reviews and approves materials and processes for organic food and fiber production.

  3. No, if they were it would not be organic.

What confuses me is that you can still use black plastic mulches, and poly tunnels which do not biodegrade and call your self organic.

  4. I disagree with the others.  Why?  Look at what happens when a cow or horse pees in the pasture, more often than not the high amount of urea (nitrogen) in the urine temporarily kills the grass.  In commercial operations ammonium nitrate is added to commercial herbicides to increase the killing power.  You could use the same method on undesirable plants.  The urine would be both a herbicide and a fertilizing agent at the same time.

Bear in mind that a herbicide isn't necessarily man made.  A herbicide is any thing that kills plants, desirable or undesirable.  Besides, there's plenty of "herbicides" that occur naturally.  For example, the allopathic effect of certain plants like cereal rye (especially on grass weeds), black walnut (especially on tomatoes), growing alfalfa on germinating alfalfa and so on.  Even applying mulch is going to act as a herbicide.

Maybe you should have said "man made formulations" of herbicides.
