Are hideous names a form of child abuse?

Either names that are just outright strange or a "normal" name with a bizarre pronunciation or spelling, and then the parents having a hissy fit when someone doesn't pronounce or spell them "correctly" according to them. I'm all for unique but there is a fine line.

I personally think it is but I was curious as to what others think.

  1. i agree with you. what sucks is that the parents act all upset and get irrate if you mispronounce or mispell there kids name, and the kid sees the parents acting like that, and then they act like that too, like you should know how to spell it. and they will probably name their kids crazy names too. never ending cycle---kinda like welfare.  maybe i shouldnt go that far

  2. What is hideous to one person may be beautiful to another.  So no I don't believe its child abuse.

  3. Child abuse? That is a little extreme. I don't think pple should make up names, but i wouldn't call it child abuse?

  4. Wasn't there a court case about this recently?  And the girls name was something like Talullah Did The Hula In Hawaii-she went to court to change it and the judge ruled her name could be changed.  In addition, she was removed from her parents while a suitable name was found.  What are those parents thinking about when they give their children names like that?  And parents of girls are more likely to do that kind of thing than boys, it has to do with wanting to make their daughter unique.

  5. Absolutely not. These kids may grow up to hate their names as much as some who dislike (what they see as generic) names like Kimberly, Tom or other common names. They can always change them or go by another name (made-up or middle) if that's their desire. To compare unusual names to actual child abuse (emotional or otherwise) is inane.

  6. well a bad name is nothing compared to physical child abuse.

    more like child-cruelty!

  7. I would say a form yes. It's giving your child an unfair chance with the kids around them. Children can be cruel and names just give more reason to tease, and hurt other children's feelings. There is a way to be unique without going over the edge of a cliff. I gave 2 of my children names that people seem to get wrong. But they are normal names that you would see on a normal day. Brianna and Madeline. We call her Bree on uh and Mad uh lynn. We get Bree anne uh and Mad uh LINE. But I don't regret their names, and people who are involved in their lives daily got corrected once and have had it right ever since.

  8. Hahaha. It should be. I mean, really. Anyone who names their child something like "Kal-El" or "Peaches Honeyblossom" should be shot. And yes, those are real people's names. There's an actor I like named Norbert Leo Butz. Parents like that are just annoying :) Thank god my parents gave me a nice, normal first name to balance my weird last name!

  9. No.

You can change and erase your name.

You can't change or erase the memories of your parents emotionally or physically beating you.

  10. oh my gosh yeah it is ! it's like people need to leave name spellings alone because, No,  spelling it Jazmyn instead of Jasmine does not make it pretty or unique. it makes it ugly and just stupid.
