2) the ones who spin and just scratch, no.  if they can take an existing song and make it new, yes.

3) they can be but it isn't necessary.  A good producer may be able to guide the song writer or sound engineer in the correct direction but doesn't need to be a musician.

- That's impossible to answer because there are so many different types of musicians, even in just one genre.  Can I really say that ?uestlove is a better drummer than DJ Qbert is a turntablist?  Can I really say that Rakim is a better lyricist than DJ Premier is a sound composer?

- Again, impossible to answer.

- I think any of the musicians in the Roots can hold their own with anyone else who plays those particular instruments.  Even if you're talking about more traditional hip hop artists, I think they can be viewed on equal footing as far as musically.  I don't care how rhythmically talented a drummer is, he's not going to be able to do what Cut Chemist or DJ Babu can do on the tables in just a few days.

2)  yes and no, depending.  anyone can learn to mix songs, good djs can make songs their own.  the skill and work involved is equal to those who play instruments.
