  1. People in general (especially teenagers) tend to make assumptions about 'the unknown'. By the unknown I just mean what's not familiar to them. Lots of people are homeschooled, but they are still a minority and that makes them different. Lots of people (again, mostly teenagers) don't like the idea of doing anything differently and that includes education. Homeschooled students are seen to be geeky because of the supposed lack of social interaction. They only think like that because of their ignorance. They don't have a clue that homeschooled students actually do socialise. I know it's hard, but you'll have to ignore them until they grow up a bit.

  2. Some people a prejudiced to being home schooled the same way that they're prejudiced to a certain religion. No, home schoolers aren't dorky. There are some pros and cons to being home schooled, like some people CAN be socially awkward.

I'm actually trying to convince my mom to home school me for high school. She gave me a list of requirements, though. Like, I have to have a social plan for each week. I have to volunteer, and do a lot of stuff.

But, I totally support home schooling ;)

  3. No! I know several people that are home schooled. I think the stereotype that home schoolers are dorky comes from the fact that people believe that because they don't go to a big public or private school they don't get out much.  Which is a total lie, just because home schoolers have school in homes or in small groups doesn't mean they don't get out. They do other activites too that allow them to be just like everyone else, except schooled at home! :]

  4. im new to homeschooling and get the same respons from people. i think a lot of homeschoolers are dorky and wierd becuase a lot of them arent "worldly". parents of homeschoolers are sumtimes over protective so they dont go to the mall or see sertain movies. for examle.. mi neighbor is 14 and hes homeschooled , but has to go to bed at 8 and cant even see sum pg movies. also sum peaple homeschool for finnacial reasons so there not in style. no wat i mean?

  5. Honestly?  Negative images from the media, myths, and urban legends.

  6. home schoolers r NOT dorky. people just aren't used  to them as much.

  7. I'm a public-schooled kid.  Word of advice:  In public schools, the general mass follows a "culture of cruelty."  Making other people feel bad is a status-booster.  Just ignore the idiots who call you dorky.  They'll end up in the Department of Sanitation.

  8. It's because they have no idea what your life is really like - they just know it's different from theirs, so that must make it wrong.  Sad, but true.

Funny...most of the homeschooled kids I know and teach are independent, confident, sociable, caring kids that are truly preparing to make something of themselves.  However, when I went to public school, I was the buck-toothed freak that believed whatever was taught from the front of the class.

Looking back, I would have given my left pinky to be homeschooled - I just didn't know that it even existed.  (It didn't, legally, in my state at the time.)

You're not a freak, you're an individual. If other people can't see that, well, that's their fault - not yours.  Choose to listen to the people who see you for who you are, not for what they think you might be.  There will always be people who are insecure, ignorant, or just plain in the dark - listen to the people who really see you.

  9. I wentto public school, & I was called a dork, but my son is homeschooled, & he's considered the cool kid.

Funny thing was my best friend who dressed like Laura Inglauls by her choice, was considered cool. I think the ONLY reaso nshe was considered cool, was because she gave all the guys she went out with s*x, but I was NOTHING like her, we were as different as night & day. I refused to give into guy. I knew what the word NO ment! She on the other hand refused to say NO becuase she wanted to be cool.

  10. A lot of home schooled kids are not concerned about fashion trends so they dress the way they, or their parents want them to dress.  Also many are not in tune with the current fad.  That is usually a good thing.

But you can't generalize or judge one by them all.

One of my kids is totally trendy, the other is stuck in the 19th century.  It's an individual thing. (neither have buck teeth or are freaks)

But NO, home schooled kids are NOT dorky.  They are individuals and not clones.

  11. I was homeschooled and I am now one of the most popular trendiest kids on my campus. It just depends on the individual.

  12. I work in the public school and there are dorky kids there too.

I don't see much difference in public school kids and homeschool kids.   All people are different and I think that they should be encouraged not to be like everybody else.   It's so funny that young people pride themselves in individuality yet must have the same attire as the person in the commercial or in the magazine.  They criticize people who are not afraid to find themselves and be themselves.

    Rather silly, in my opinion.

  13. People just can't stand anything that isn't the norm but still works. I'm homeschooled, have tons of friends, go to parties and dances, play in a sixties rock band, am in lots of clubs, have a boyfriend, and am going to college. I love school, but not because I'm a dork. It's because when you're homeschooled you can actually MAKE it fun and enjoyable and do things you'd never be able to do in public school.

I think people who are "in the norm" just can't stand the fact that homeschoolers can adjust to social situations and make friends and generally be happy without settling for less in life or sacrificing their individuality.

  14. i think it depends on the person.  my kids have been homeschooled, and i went to a public school and i was the dork!

  15. I was the same way. When i was home-schooled everyone though i was weird until i told them that i surf, play basketball and was training to become a lifeguard.

  16. Public school provides kids with so much more than bookwork and processed lunches ! It teaches them to enteract with other children . It teaches them to rely on each other . Alot of times homeschooled kids are just alittle ahead of public school kids maturity wise . Maybe thats why they seem alittle "different" to other kids of the same age .

  17. Ah. Aren't you glad you aren't at public school having to fight to be in the popular group, or get picked on for not being.

Everyone thinks you're a weirdo because EVERYONE (except homeschoolers) KNOW that homeschoolers are freaks. They know this because they know someone who knows someone who was homeschooled and was a freak. Very reliable evidence. Anyway. You probably are a geek. You have interests outside of boys and shopping, don't you? Apparently that's all it takes to be a dork.
