Are hotel confirmation numbers random?

I think so, but if you make a consecutive reservation say at a marriott, then you have consecutive conf #. I know at Hilton properties if you make more than one res. at a time then you are going to have the same conf number for all reservations.

Also hilton and marriott's (im not sure if all brands do this) conf # start with the number 8. So they may be random to some degree....
