Question:

Are human nail clippers safe to use on Ferrets?

I lost my Ferret's nail clippers and am waiting on a new pair in the mail. Their nails are getting long enough to start snagging on things. The new clippers could take up to a week to get here.

I have a pair of regular finger nail clippers and some infant ones I had for my son after he was born. Which would be best to use?

Last night one of their nails got caught on a blanket and was a pain to get off without hurting him, so I need to do it asap.

  1. I own five ferrets and I rescue ferrets. One of the first thing i do when i rescue a ferret is clip it's nails. I have never used anything but human nail clipers. I think it is whatever you feel most comfortable using. Hope this help.

  2. I use the large ones I think toe nail ones! On my rabbits! Make sure you dont cut them tooo short! If the bleed put flour on in and it will stop it from bleeding

  3. yeah human nail clippers are fine thats all i've ever used just be very careful not to cut to much off

  4. Yes I have used human nail clippers and it worked fine. It's just a little harder and have to be more careful. It's better than them ripping a nail off.

  5. Yes, human nail clippers work fine, it's all I ever use on mine. You can use either the infant or adult size clippers, whichever you feel more comfortable with. One thing I want to mention that none of the above posters mentioned yet is to turn the nail clippers vertically when trimming your ferrets nails. Using them horizontally (like you do when clipping your nails) will push down on the nail before cutting it.
