  1. Yes. Art, by definition, is what the individual defines it to be. There is no certain list of qualities that must be in a true artwork. Yet a child's fingerpainting is not considered art, except by the mother of that child.

As a whole, I believe society is very elitist when it comes to art, which is why modern art still faces quite a bit of controversy within society. And until individuals begin to view a piece as art, they cannot truly appreciate it.

  2. I dont really understand the question. Individuals per se are not elitist, they may be or they may be populist. Its not restricted to Art it runs throughout life. Critics may be considered elitist, but by nature of their job, this is probably understandable. Artists may also exhibit such characteristics - and again the nature of their job almost dictates that. Individuals should be 'individual' about art - they should decide what they like, rather than be told by Artist, Critic or anyone else in the herd!

Art should provoke emotion and be accessible - after that everything else is opinion ..... and mine (of course) is always correct - as is yours!

  3. In my experience they are,,I have had one or two conversations about a picture only for me to introduce myself as the artist,I have always found it amusing,I detest art snobery as it does nothing other than attempt to belittle others opinions,

Elitism over art can come in many forms from the artist through the gallery and the final customer, the final outcome is that you can either paint or you can`t and you either like a picture or not,,,

  4. **** Yeah, art is (supposed to be) for everyone and accessable to everyone but ignorant middle class people are attracted to it as it is easy to belittle other people and appear informed whilst doing so. In my experience a lot of what people say is bollocks or more specifically Artbollocks and people should really think what they are saying before they open their mouths. A good place to start for pretentious free Art is the Yorkshire Sculpture park nr Wakefield. The work is by Anthony Goldsworthy (among others) and is easily accessable, exhibited well and the bullshit is kept to a minimum plus they do a nice coffee. Oh and becuase its set in the grounds of a country house its a nice place to go for a picnic with your girlfriend/significant other on a sunny day.
