I live in the south of ireland on the border of northern ireland. I am still on a provisonal licence. I have been told on many occasions that a southern driver on a provsional licence is not allowed to drive unaccompanied or not at all in northern ireland. does anyone know is there any truth in this ?

  1. No, you are not allowed. The provisional licence is only for learning to drive and is not valid in any jurisdiction outside of the Republic.

I don't know if this is enforced in NI though. You may get away with it.

  2. OK you need to read your motor insurance brief as I am quite sure you would not be covered to drive in NI on a provo license, for a start you could not legally drive on any motorways , as far as I know no provo license from any country is legal to drive in NI you have to have a full license, How come there are so many people driving around on provisional licenses anyway,,,I mean that's not a license to drive as you have not been able to pass a test of proficiency and ability...it makes you out to be a duff driver

  3. drive away

  4. No and you are not allowed on motorways(in republic) either

  5. yes its true, but do what everyone else does, just take down the L plates and hope your not asked for your license

  6. yes it is the truth.you cannot drive in the U.K without a recognised driver in the passenger seat,if you have a provisional license.

  7. I don't think you are allowed drive with a provisional licence in another EU state. Check with the police to be sure.
