im 16 and as my first car, my dad bought me a beat down 1986 jaguar xj6...he went in and practically redid and rewired the whole car, mechanical, interior, and exterior. Ive been reading other answers on here and like 90% of the answers say their bad. If you own a jaguar, or have owned one, are they really that bad?

  1. I guess you haven't looked at insurance quotes yet ?

i think it unlikley you'll get insurance for below £5K, if you can find it at all - you'll certainly have to trawl around specialist brokers to get insurance for this at 17 years old.

Older models are not great, '86 falls into "older" I'm afraid.

    Rebuilding a jag for a 16 year old ???

Sorrry, that was a  pointless exercise adn probably more to do with what he wanted from a  hobby than providing you with a car. Nice thought Dad, but a Nova would have been a better idea.

It'll be an absolute money pit

  2. I have tinkered on a few.  But not much more then that.  The usual issues were dealing with electronic problems and other small parts.  Still a decent car if you can afford to keep up with the preventative work.

  3. My boss's Jag isn't even 9 years old yet and has had to have the engine replaced twice with a rebuild in between.  And he lost his transmission on the Triboro Bridge and jammed up NYC traffic for over 3 hours.  Not nice, not nice at all.

  4. Sorry bro, you have a car that your dad wished he owned and

is using you to fill his lost dream.

My dad did this (in a way) with my brothers 1969 Triumph TR6.

These cars are notorious for problems, and costly ones too.

Their electrical systems are downright junk.

You see, Jaguars were designed for the the rich, who use only them when the Rolls Royce is in for repair.

(not really, just something I heard about 25 years ago )

Back to facts here. You will see for yourself. This car is gonna be a sore spot in your life till it winds up in the hands

    of a Salvage Yard.

But wait, be real happy your dad bought you anything to drive in the first place. You will appreciate owning a vehicle more if your out their helping him while he's dripping from sweat and aggravation on the electrical system...

I really hope this car at least gives you some good driving experience and safety.

      Oh boy,,,,,,,,

  5. yes they are very unreliable

don't buy a jag or an Audi or a Saab.

  6. Yeah I guess so
