  1. grand cherokees are great we had a 95 GC with 190,000miles and no major problems had a 01 GC sold it with 130,000miles and no major problems (still had lots of life left) and we now have 3 04 GC's all have about 60,000miles and are great i have the 4.7 V-8 and it get good mpg all time best is 19.3mpg highway and have no have any problems

  2. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is known for its unreliability. Things will often go wrong. My mom had one and by 125,000 miles she had basically replaced every major part. The new ones have a really good warranty so I would think about putting the 5K down on a new SUV and not having to worry about the upkeep. There are also better options out there instead of a Jeep but it seems like you already have your mind made up. Good Luck!

  3. If you want a Jeep that badly, the Jeep Cherokee, which was only made until about the year 2000-2001, is very reliable. It may have less bells and whistles, but they aren't as prone to the Grand Cherokee's popular flaws. If you have 5 thousand to spend, you could invest in a 1999 or 2000 Cherokee if this is specifically the brand you are looking for.

I have a basic Cherokee and I love it. They tend to have long lives and their engines are extremely durable.

If your heart's just set on a Grand Cherokee, just make sure to do your homework on the vehicle first, and if it'd make you feel better, have a mechanic look at it before purchasing the vehicle. I have met many Jeep Grand owners that love them, but as with about any other vehicle it does have flaws.

  4. Which motor does it have?  Unless its the 4.0L I6 (Straight 6) engine stay away from it.  The straight 6 engines are bullet proof motors, they'll take a beating, and keep going.  They're also pretty decent for fuel economy.  My 96 JGC LTD is at 193,732 miles and I still average 18mpg city/24-26mpg highway.

Also they're excellent in the snow.  Especially if you get one that's full time 4WD, that way you don't have to worry about shifting into or out of 4WD.

My jeep is all stock except for an ARB Winch Bumper on the front and it does great offroad too, even with standard street all weather tires.

  5. With that many miles on it, it's likely to be in for some major maintenance services in the near future (suspension overhaul is pretty much a given, maybe some transmission or differential work). Take this into account and make sure you set aside enough money for routine upkeep and age-related maintenance.

As long as you keep on top of maintenance, though, the 2000 WJ Grand Cherokee isn't a bad vehicle.

The other question to ask is *why* that particular vehicle is cheaper than similar vehicles. Maybe it's been in a major crash. Maybe there's something wrong with it the owner isn't letting on. Maybe the owner did a total hackjob on some repair and it's a death trap waiting to explode and murder you and your neighbors.
