It's well-documented, but a big of a taboo subject.  Ashkenazi Jews are undeniably on average more intelligent (if you consider IQ an accurate reflection of intelligence) than any other ethnicity.  

Even though Jews are less than 2% of the U.S. population, almost 30% of Ivy League professors are Jews.  Moreover, it's evident that Jews -- from Einstein to Freud to the disproportionate amount of Jewish Nobel Prize winners -- that they have cultural and scientific contributions well beyond their numbers.

Here is Mark Twain (non-Jew) on the subject:

Depends.

Jews from Europe score on average 10 points higher, and generally much better on verbal IQ.

Jews in Israel and elsewhere score just like the people around them.

Ashkenazim high IQ's might be as a result of surviving long term persecution through the middle ages in Christian Europe (the dumb die). Or it could be a founder effect, as they originally came form a small group that moved into Europe.

The Probability of that is very low. Humans barely change by 0.1% between races and that stat accounts for superficial changes like skin colour etc etc. The interesting thing about Judaism or the reason one might think that is that they are united. Circumcision is a good way to keep the tribe together, and the practices of Judaism has kept them together for nearly 6000 years. Though you are just as likely to find a dumb Jewish person as you're to find a dumb Chinese person etc.

Yes we are, all of us, from Ethiopian Jews, to Ashkenazi, to Misrahi of all categories but before you brand me an elitist swine, I will reveal to you several secrets as to why.

The Jews as a group of people, have an unshakeably strong belief in self worth.  Black people believed from whites that they were inferior, and stupid, as a result, they program their children that way, to be inferior and stupid, many of them.  Same with hispanics and other poor people of the world.  No matter how viciously people told us Jews how stupid we were, how idiotic and weak we were, we never believed a word of it.  None of us, anywhere in the world, not even in the Arab world.

The true secret to Jewish intelligence is not in our genes, but an unshakeable belief in our worth as a group of people, which in some, and I will admit to this, goes as far as self important arrogance that leads them to harm many.  Whistle blower Jews, are branded as "self hating," when all they are saying is pointing out to the various abuses and crimes committed by many I'm sad to say, so-called relatives.

You ever see that Bruce Willis and Denzel Washington movie, that movie in which Bruce Willis and Denzel Washington both fought terrorists?  It was made in the late 1990's, I forget the name but I will not forget a line uttered towards the end.

The terrorist, towards the end of the movie if I can paraphrase said;

" knowledge is not power; belief is power.  If you believe, you can do anything.  That is what real power is."

No belief is more important, than what you believe yourself to be or how valuable you are, on a deep subconscious level, the deepest part of your mind.  Because Jews the world over grew up being bombarded with how important they were in the grand scheme of things, that neurobiological programing led them to well, confirm those beliefs as much as possible.  That lead many Jews to study hard, pursue anything academic, or get good at whatever it is they chose to do.

That has been the real secret to Jewish success, NOT "superior" genes.  The Chinese civilization, has arguably achieved far more than the Jews, numbers and all.  The Jews, especially ashkenazi may hold many nobel prizes, but unlike China, Israel did not last 4,000 years running without the people losing their land.

The Chinese held on to their lands, as a continuous culture, for 4,000 years.  No Jew can say the same of Israel, so, so much for our self importance, for some of us who are unforgivingly and disgustingly arrogant.

Yes, Jews really are smarter, but this is tied to the way the human brain develops, and the importance of having a belief, from earliest childhood, of how important you are, a belief put in there by your parents.  The reason that in adoption cases, black children are not as intelligent as white kids, again, it has to be their BIOLOGICAL PARENTS instilling their sense of worth, not their adoptive ones.

That is, we place greater importance in what OUR BIOLOGICAL PARENTS TELL US WE ARE, and how important we are, than society at large.  Because society at large constantly, gleefully and maliciously reminds blacks about how dumb they are, even the most loving adoptive home will not make a black kid smart sadly.  He or she has to hear they are worthwhile from his or her biological parents, for them to feel it, to know it, and be programmed as such.

There are some people born smarter than everyone else, but circus freak I.Q. numbers occur in all races, it just so happens that the media of this country only publicizes the white kids to constantly reinforce racist beliefs.

The combination of, some "self hating" Jews will say, arrogant self importance, and the culture of the middle east which has always valued studying, which Jews took with them werever they went, aspects of middle eastern culture, leads many Jews to have a much higher than average neurobiological development.  As a culture, as a people, no group of people has a sense of importance, and purpose, as the Jews.

So see, it isn't genetic; any group of people can become intelligent and the truth is a way has to be found to maximize human intellectual potential if humanity as a whole is to survive this milenium.

Stephen Hawking warned that unless we start building starships within the next 200 years, the human race will become extinct within the next 500.

As a culture, the Jewish people are strong on education. They start children early and likely by the time IQ tests are given the kids have a head start and score better.

The culture places emphasis on working together and being supportive of each other. I suspect the "smarter" is due to culture not genetics

This research is also like the research by Prof. Lynn in early 1990, sparks lots of controversies. One question comes to their mind, why Asian people seems to be among the top IQ nations, do not produce that many geniuses. This will be clearly explained when they do more research on number of geniuses per people. This explains why some countries contribute lots to human being while other don't (even they're smart). The statistics are based on number of geniuses or highly gifted per thousand people. These people are typically Nobel prize or other international prize winners, university professors, scientists, researchers, executives for large corporations, billionaires ... In conclusion, Asian people may be regarded as some of the smartest but indeed, they don't produce that many geniuses. The only exception to Asian countries is Japan which is already westernized for more than 300 years ago. Asian seems to be smart on average, but the super smarts are ended up in Western countries. So perhaps, Westerners possess both the geniuses on the high end of the IQ and probably the really stupid people on its lower end?

I like Jewish and really admire them. If you live in US, Canada... you could see many Jewish are Nobel prize or other major prize winners, university professors, scientists, researchers, executives for large corporations, billionaires, top notch Phds, MDs, engineers, architects, judges, authors... and also many in politics, entertainment, sports...

This , to me , is a question that can only lead to a pointless debate!!

Intelligence is a difficult item to measure since it is dependent upon education ,cultural influences , diet and nutrition and a whole host of variables and biases!!!

  If one does possess more intelligence does that guarantee that it will be used or how the individual will benefit or even those around him will benefit in the scheme of things!!

It is a cute little question to ask and to use to bolster one's ego and degrade others but no more!!

I don't know, but it seems equally plausible that the Germans (Caucasian Europeans) are the smartest.    

There are others who claim the Hungarians to be the smartest because of their high number per capita of Nobel Prize winners (but, of course, what wasn't emphasized was that the majority of those Nobel winners in Hungary were Jewish).

Jewish people aren't a race...Judaism is a religion...Hebrews were a race.  Jewish people tend to be smarter because it's not a sin to question.  In Christianity there were many ideas and thoughts that were taken on FAITH...for example: The Earth is the center of the Solar System instead of the Sun.  It took many, many years of further study and capitulation on the part of the Church to acknowledge that simply wasn't factual.  While the Church languished in thoughts and ideas that were taken on faith the Jewish people excelled in study and during the so called DARK AGES (a result of the Church keeping people in the "dark" and controlling them)...The Jewish folks continued to LEARN and grow intellectually...In effect the Church put the rest of humanity several hundred years behind the Jewish people in terms of intellectual knowledge and development.  This is why it's wrong for questioning to be sinful.  PEACE!

It does seem that way.

I had this discussion with a Jewish psychiatrist friend of mine.

I made the statement that is we look to history we see an inordinate percentage of Jewish people in the science, serious music and the arts.

Marty was not a large person. He said, think about it for a moment. All we ever heard from our mothers was study study study. In the neighborhood, you could be small, if...you were really smart.

I realize that it's not as simple as this but the message is that Jews have been surviving since the Romans carried them all over Europe as indentured servants.

They were spread all over old Europe from around the second century. They settled in every country in Europe and were most often not welcomed openly.

Eventually, they were accepted grudgingly because they studied long and hard and became professionals, doctors, lawyers, accountants, scientists and so on.

Actually, the Jewish population of most European countries invented the middle class. Europe was quite happy with the elite class and peasants with nothing in between.

When a royal must call a doctor or a mathematician or a lawyer, it is hard to look down on this with much success.

So, this new middle class became accepted as relevant because they could do things most others couldn't.

They achieve more since they study hard and long. I imagine Marty was correct, it is not a natural superiority but the results of really hard work! They came by their smartness the old fashioned way,,,they earned it.
