(Burnaby, B.C) My son have been in family daycare since he was 9 mo. old and just recently moved to a licensed group daycare. He is 2 y.o. now.

One of my friends told me that my son should go to preschool because it is one of the requirement when he go to school in the future here in B.C.

Another one of my friend told me that group day care would be ok since they have programs just like preschool. so which one is correct? I am a new comer in Canada and not familiar with the education system. Thanks so much for the information.

Cheers

  1. No. not mandatory. It justs helps children prepare for elementary school and get the hang of things.  I would suggest sending a child to preschool, because then they already know more about the schedules and they wont have such a hard time the first day of school.

  2. If it's like the UK, then no. But they definately gain from pre-school compared to playgroups and nursery.

  3. Here is some information on how you an do preschool at home:

  4. Look into the education code for your area.  Or just call a local school and ask if they have any resources for you.

  5. Oh, it helps those kids whose parents would not interact with them in at home, sure. But it's not required for anyone. Since you sounds like a caring parent who doesn't just stick them in front of the TV, I think he'll be fine.

Good luck with your new life in Canada.

  6. As a mom, and grandma I would say neither one is.

Babies belong with their mommies, to be cared for and nurtured so they can grow up to feel secure and safe.

You would have to check with the requirements in your school district.

Here in the US, preschool nor kindergarten is mandatory; children often do not fall under the mandatory attendance law until ages 6, or 7.

If it is mandatory in your area, you can choose to register as a home school family, and allow them to be children until they are ready to be in any formal setting :(

  7. I am sure you won't want to hear this but I think it is best for a child this young to be at home with it's mother. There is no better teacher then the one who loves you. I think children who are able to spend these first years with their mother will be a more well rounded and emotionally stable adult. These are the bonding years, the forming of their minds and emotions. They are being shaped by who they are around all day. Much better for the little guy if this is done by his parents instead of a child care worker.

  8. Kids are not required to go to preschool.

  9. Although some parents do prefer to put their child in preschool, my daughter did not go, because I could not afford it.  I stayed at home with her until she started kindergarten.  I also think it's very important, and more stable, for a child to stay at home with the mother until age 5.

  10. No, they arn't. It can be a good idea....my nephew did and he got speach thearapy. I didn't go threw preschool but I was smarter than my whole class because my baby sitter taught us "School". She had it going on. She was babysitting 20+ kids and we ALL got help with school work.

  11. Preschool is always a good idea, but it's not required. Required education starts at kindergarten.

  12. No.
