This is the knife that I'd like, but as you can see, there's a small catch on the knife that allows it to be opened straight from the pocket. I haven't really seen this type of knife in California, so i was wondering if there was a law against them.

  1. if where ever your getting this knife from is a store in cali/ ships to cali, it's legal. and if it's not, the store gets in trouble

  2. Some people call this a "wave" style opener, though I think that's a trademark from Emerson.

In actuality, any knife can be opened this way using an old trick that I will not discuss here.  But the fact is, it is very unlikely that they are illegal.  Non-spring One-handed knives are legal in CA, including those with thumb-studs or holes.  A pocket catch is no different: It is part of the blade that is used to manually move the blade to it's open position.  There is no spring or button.

These are pretty cool designs, though one caveat I will give you is doing this repeatedly will eventually rip your pants pocket!

Like any knife or other weapon, behave yourself, don't be hooligan, and you'll be fine.
