Are koalas endangered?

Although not officially classified as endangered they are included in the potentially vulnerable list of I U C N(International union of conservation of nature), the population of the beloved koala has dropped by 90% in less than a decade! This is due to the destruction of their natural habitat, a narrow crescent on the eastern coast of Australia. Logging, agriculture and urban development have not only reduced the area available to them, but added other dangers. Their habitat has been criss-crossed by roads, resulting in many road kills, and attacks by neighboring pet dogs now are frequent. Disease, too, has taken its toll.

I'm not sure if they're on the endangered species list yet.  But I used to live in the Redland Shire which has a large koala population and their rapidly diminishing habitat is a problem.  A friend rescued one off the main road a few months ago!  A lot are also suffering from venereal disease (chlamydia) aka wet bottom or brown bottom, in that area - those frisky koalas!  And don't forget the household dogs and ferral foxes.

They are listed as "Near Threatened", which is 3 steps above the endangered level on the Conservation Status chart.
