Are large tortoises poisonous?

Recently, a friend of mine at school and I were visiting this petting zoo(in the reptile area). I was petting an iguana and he was petting this snapping tortoise(the large kind). Suddenly without warning the tortoise it lashed out and started chasing him. We both made it back inside the building inside but he had a nasty wound on his ankle and had to go to the hospital.

So, even though his wound has healed somewhat today, I just would like to ask if snapping tortoises/turtles are poisonous because he was concerned about unknown bacteria getting into and infecting his wound.

  1. no they are not poisonous but a bite from one will be quite big as they have a Sharpe beak like mouth, the problem would be infection with a bite like this but it would be from other sources rather than the tortoise

  2. No, There are no turtles, or tortoises that are poisonous.  People have been know to get sick from eating certain turtles, but that is associated with what the turtle has been eating, usually things like mushrooms.   So to answer your question "no".

  3. well i don't think they are poisonous but it is really the bacteria that could cause problems.

  6. He is right to worry about infection, but turtles and tortoises are not venemous.
