  1. Not as much as people claim. It can be but not to the level some people think by watching tv and listening to horror stories told by shocked people who experience rush hour in a major city.

It really depends on the specific time and place. If you are in Tokyo or Osaka at rush hour trying to take a train it is extremely crowded you may be smashed in like a sardine in a can. This is the extreme though.

There are crowded area's and non crowded areas. Some places are residential in nature and very leisurely and sparse other popular places are very crowded like any city. If you are downtown then of course you can expect a crowd. You also have to factor in weather too. If it is a nice day or there is a festival it will become crowded.

  2. In the bigger cities (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Sapporo), yes, they can be quite crowded. But that goes for ALL major cities. But Japan also has many rural places with much more room to move. In the bigger cities you give up space for better job opportunities and technology, in little towns you get bigger living spaces and better quality of environment but trains, fancy cars, department stores, and other various luxuries you pass up.

  3. boy, is it ever.
