Question:

Are long vacations for company workers acceptable?

So I'm 16 and work as an intern at a really nice company in my city. I have been here 4-5 months and my parents are planning to take me on a trip to Vietnam for 3 weeks! I'm excited! I told my employer about it, they are very nice about it. Yet, I know they may not be very happy. What is the longest ACCEPTABLE vacation to take? I mean...hasn't ANYONE travelled for that long before? It's hard for me to believe...but I feel really really bad. I'm taking the trip anyways, I need to see my grandma. My main question is WHETHER LONG VACATIONS EVER HAPPEN?

Thanks.

  1. It's not very common.  Most workers only get 2 weeks per year.

  2. It depends on the employer.  Some are flexible and some aren't.  Some companies give 2 weeks of vacation when the company says you can take it.  These companies typically shut down for 2 weeks for maintenance.  Others let you schedule your vacation to your needs.  Some companies give more vacation to workers who have been around longer.  I've had jobs where you start at 2 weeks of vacation after the first year but could work up to 5 weeks of vacation after about 15 years.  It sounds like your boss is very understanding and knows how much this trip means to you.  Make sure to tell him you appreciate his kindness.  Work hard both before you leave and after you get back.
