Are maggots bad for composite piles?

  1. No not really. The only thing that concerns me is why are they there. Maggots usually are a sign that their is some type of meat available. Hopefully you have not been adding any meat products to your compost heap as it will attract fly's and unwanted carnivores into your yard. Also, the smell of rotting meat is sometimes unbearable to the nasal passages. A good decomposing compost pile, if done right, should smell fresh and sweet. The only thing that you should be adding to the pile is vegetative matter not meat. Hope this answers your question.

  2. Billy Ray has it. Never throw meat or dairy products in a compost pile. Maggots HAVE to be there b/c of meat.

  3. Icky. What did you throw in there to attract them? Do you have a vegetarian pile?  I've never seen any maggots in mine -- lots of other grubby things, but no maggots.
