  11. Even the English word 'mango' is derived from 'maangai', a Tamil [an ancient, but still living South Indian language] word - which is acknowledged even by the Oxford Dictionary...

Expert seafarers, the ancient Tamils had extensive trade links with many a distant isle - including Java/Sumatra [called 'Saavaka'] and the Philippines [known to them, as 'Pushpaka'].

These traders brought gifts of mango saplings for the local chieftains who ruled these isles - and as the soil in the  Pushpaka isles was very similar to that of Southern India, these saplings thrived well, and grew to yield abundantly.

...When they noticed that even the seeds which they just threw away after relishing the fruit could germinate, take root and spout into saplings, the Filipinos of yore realised that they could raise entire plantations of mangoes.

And mangoes soon became an integral part of the Philippine ethos !

At the Tamimi Market in Riyadh,  I can buy any fruit from all over the world (if I had the cash, which I don't) because Saudi Arabia imports all of them, if not grow some themselves.  But mangoes from the Philippines is a rarity.  Most mangoes here come from Pakistan or elsewhere, and they are not colored the same.  Their skin look somewhat reddish on some parts.  And they seem bigger and rounder than the mangoes I know from the Philippines.
