    viruses are NOT alive, so they are not organisms since they are non-living

  3. All organisms require ATP to survive. Some organisms, such as archaebacteria and very very simple organisms can get by with producing a great deal less energy than some. Cellular respiration, which requires oxygen, usually takes place in the more complex, multicellular organisms. Organisms that are obligate anaerobes, such as the extremophiles that live on the deep-sea thermal vents, can only perform anaerobic respiration. This process only produces 2-4 ATP in comparison to aerobic respiration, which produces 32-36 ATP. However, no living organism can survive without producing some amount of ATP. That is part of the definition of being biological.

    Technically viruses may "survive" without producing energy as they are not cells, but they are not technically organisms either.
