Question:

Are masonry screws suitable for long term outdoor use?

I read somewhere that masonry screws are better for indoor use, because outdoors they tend to weaken over time due to the elements. I wanted to use some for a project outside, but I was under the impression they would last a long time regardless of where they are. So what's the real answer to this?

  1. yes out side they last 15 years

  2. Masonary screws have a zinc oxide coating which will cause galvanic corrosion and weaken them over time.  For outdoor use chromium coated, regular wood screws, and drywall screws will work just fine.  Unless you're doing a heavy duty project where the screws will actually be supporting weight, vice holding things together, masonary screws will be fine.

  3. You are talking about tapcon screws..they are quite expensive I would use stainless steel ones as suggested by robert..DO NOT USE DRYWALL SCREWS as someone suggested..they will rust over time..and they are a brittle alloy of metal not meant to be used outside or on any project that will have any movement

  4. Yo can get galvinised or stainless steel they will last out side.
