Are massages taxable in NY state?

I recently bought my wife a massage and after purchasing the gift certificate online, I was taxed. I feel like there's something fishy going on.

most likely it is. they wouldn;t charge tax if they didn't have to. It's not exactly something needed to survive on - like food or clothing - both of which are actually taxed in some states
