If I open the microwave oven door right away, are there still microwaves present? I mean right after the last second. Also, what's this 'not being safe' if standing in front of micro during cooking?

  1. Of course not.  The microwaves are present only when the oven is actually running, and not all the time even when the oven is running.  If you pay attention to the sound of the oven,  you can hear when the klystron tube is generating microwaves and when it is not.  The oven is designed to alternately turn on and off the microwave generator.

But be assured there is no residual microwave energy that exists after the oven stops.

The oven is designed to contain all of the microwave radiation produced, so unless there is some damage to the door or somewhere else on the unit, there is no danger when standing in front of the oven while it is operating.

  2. microwaves are designed to shield the outside from microwave radiation, all of them are designed to shut off the vary second you open the door, more info below.
